DIY Leprechaun Card with Cottage Cutz Dies

Creating personalized cards is a fun and rewarding way to celebrate any occasion. With March here, it’s time to get into the festive spirit with a St. Patrick’s Day-themed card! In this tutorial, we’ll walk through the steps of making a leprechaun card using dies from Cottage Cutz, a blend of creativity, and a little bit of crafting magic.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Marigold cardstock (for the base)
  • White and polka dot patterned paper
  • Cottage Cutz dies (Leprechaun, pot of gold, rainbow)
  • Rectangle stitched slimline dies
  • Circle stitched dies
  • Various markers for coloring
  • Glue and scissors
  • Optional: Hole punch for small circles

Step 1: Creating the Base of the Card

Start by cutting out the base for your card using Marigold cardstock. The base should measure 4 x 9 inches and be folded along the side to create a slimline card. This gives you a nice, elongated space to work with and adds a modern twist to your traditional greeting card.

Next, using rectangle stitched slimline dies, cut out two additional layers: one from white cardstock and a smaller one from your polka dot patterned paper. Layer these two on top of the card base, gluing them down to create a colorful background.

Step 2: Crafting the Pot of Gold

For the pot of gold, get creative with your existing supplies! I actually repurposed a „witches’ cauldron” die and transformed it into a pot of gold.

  • Cut the cauldron using black cardstock. Lightly dust the edges with white ink for a more textured look.
  • To simulate gold bubbles, I used yellow markers to color the „bubbles” originally intended for the cauldron.
  • For the leprechaun shoes, I used white cardstock and colored them with green, then added yellow buckles for a pop of color.
  • For the lettering, I used an alphabet die to cut out the word „YOU” and colored it using the same marker I used for the gold coins.

Attach the pot of gold onto a circle-stitched die that has been cut from more of the patterned paper, and position it on your card.

Step 3: Making the Leprechaun

The star of the card is the leprechaun, and here’s a fun fact: I actually used a Christmas baker gnome die to create him!

  • Switch up the colors from red to green to suit the St. Patrick’s Day theme.
  • For the hat, I repurposed the baker’s hat by trimming it down and free-handing the top. After tracing and assembling the hat, it perfectly fit the leprechaun vibe.
  • Attach the leprechaun onto another circle stitched die and glue it next to the pot of gold on the card.

Step 4: Adding the Rainbow

What’s a St. Patrick’s Day card without a rainbow? Use the rainbow die to cut out the shape, but don’t feel restricted to traditional rainbow colors. I chose hues that matched the overall design of my card, adding a unique touch.

  • Use various colored markers to fill in the rainbow.
  • For the clouds, add light blue outlines to give them a little more dimension and visual interest.

Glue the rainbow in place, balancing it with the leprechaun and pot of gold.

Step 5: Finishing the Title and Additional Details

For the card’s title, I used an alphabet die to cut out the words „So Lucky.”

  • Just like with the “YOU” lettering, I cut the letters from white cardstock and colored them using markers to match the card’s overall color scheme.
  • The title is positioned on top of one of the clouds to give a whimsical effect.

I also cut out additional pierced circles in various sizes from my patterned papers, scattering them around the card to add extra flair.

Step 6: Adding Final Touches to the Leprechaun

The final step involves giving your leprechaun some extra personality. For his clover, I used a flower die from the garden flowers set.

  • To create the clover look, I trimmed the middle point of each petal to give it the classic clover shape.
  • For small circles (like buttons or embellishments), I used a hole punch and colored pieces of cardstock to punch out small shapes.
  • Piece the clover and other small elements together to finish the leprechaun’s look, bringing your card to life.

Conclusion: A Fun and Festive St. Patrick’s Day Card

This card is a delightful combination of repurposed dies, colorful designs, and festive elements perfect for St. Patrick’s Day. By mixing and matching different components, such as the witch’s cauldron and Christmas gnome, you can create a card that’s truly unique.
